Basic vocabulary list

These lists below contain more than 900 words that form a very basic lexicon for learners. They are derived from an automated dictionary translation of some of the vocabulary that was derived for Basic English.

Basic English was developed by Charles Kay Ogden in 1930 as a simplified form of English. It is sometimes used by language schools to help people learn English. In the absence of a suitable similar basic Welsh lexicon this has been used as a substitute. These translations are machine produced and where the English word can be both a noun and a verb, both forms have been translated.

The list should provide a basis for a learner to ensure that they have most of the basic words.
