Lesson 2

This lesson introduces the Soft Mutation.
This is the commonest of the mutations and the most important. The letters at the beginning of the words change in certain circumstances. This is usually following certain other words .The word "o", meaning from, is a word that causes this change. You will meet others as you progress.

O ble dych chi'n dod?
Where do you come from?
(From where do you come?)
The familiar ti form is
O ble wyt ti'n dod?

Dw i'n dod o Gaerfyrddin (
I come from Carmarthen

Dw i'n dod o Fangor
I come from Bangor

VOCABULARY

This lesson's vocabulary is all about place names. Many places have their own Welsh names and this includes places outside Wales. Remember the ancient British language from which Welsh comes was once spoken all over England and Southern Scotland too. The excercise below will help you remember them. Don't worry too much about not knowing where all of these places are. They have been especially chosen to help you learn the soft mutation and to get you used to making the sound change.
